Where River Cauvery originates

Coming up on the Sampaje ghat, a deviation before seven kilometres from Madekri town is the route to Talacauvery and the holy triveni sangama at Bhagamandala. The road is broken and sure to break your back, traffic only adds to make things worse. It must be quite distressing to ride or drive on these routes on weekends, with heavy tourist traffic. Bhagamandala is home to triveni sangama - Kaveri, Kannike and the mythical Sujyothi rivers. The famous Bhagandeshwara temple - gives the place its name Bhagamandala - hosts a form of Shiva (Bhagandeswara), Subramany and Ganapati. A common practice amongst pilgrims is to take a dip in the sangama (performing rituals for their ancestors), before proceeding to Talacauvery.

Located in the Brahmagiri hills, the ride to reach Talacauvery is very scenic. This is considered to be the source of river Kaveri, hence also a holy place. To add to the beauty it rained and the finally the clouds cleared to a majestic view of the western ghat's mountain ranges. I had visited Talacauvery when in school and more recently in 2018. Back in 2018 when we visited Talacauvery from a small hamlet of Kolichal in Kasargod district, we had taken the other ghat section through Talakaveri Tiger Reserve - a dense forest with broken roads, but breathtakingly spectacular to ride.

A delicious authentic akki roti meal at one of the family run restaurant was a perfect welcome to the region of Coorg.
