 Sunlit Shrines and Silent Roads

Continuing the quest to visit lesser-known Hoysala temples, I set out early to avoid the local traffic in Mandya town—a brilliant decision, as I reached the place in about an hour. The ride was smooth, and for a change, there were no bad stretches—just the usual speed bumps at every junction along the service road of the Bangalore–Mysore Expressway.

Built in the 12th–13th century during the reign of Hoysala King Veera Ballalla III, the temples of Sri Kashi Vishwanath and Anantha Padmanabha are nestled in the village of Hosa Budanur, in Mandya district. The stone edifices on the outer walls of both temples feature intricate carvings, though no sculptures are present. The east-facing main doors of both shrines glowed in the early morning sun, bathed in golden light. The Kashi Vishwanatha temple is dedicated to Shiva, while the Anantha Padmanabha temple honors Vishnu. The main idol in the Anantha Padmanabha temple is in a standing posture—a rare and striking form.

One of the last rides in this chapter of Hoysala wanderings —though many more whisper from the map, are reserved for future explorations.
